Chelmer Canal Trust
and Work Party

The Chelmer Canal Trust Limited is a registered charity, and voluntary group whose main focus is The Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation and it's environs.

The Company of Proprietors of the Chelmer & Blackwater Navigation Limited

The Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation links Chelmsford with the Blackwater estuary, allowing suitably dimensioned boats to reach the centre of Chelmsford from the open sea via the sea lock at Heybridge Basin.

The founders of the company built the navigation between 1793 and 1797 to carry freight to Chelmsford. For more than 200 years the company has continued to maintain the waterway and act as the navigation authority.

Under a recent agreement, day to day management and maintenance of the navigation is now undertaken by Essex Waterways Limited, a division of the Inland Waterways Association.

It is navigable through it's entire length, for boats up to 60ft long x 16ft wide, and around 3ft deep by 6ft-6in high, depending on water levels.

A scheme is proposed to extend the canal into the River Stort and the main UK canal network. This is likely many years away, no detailed planning has been undertaken to date.
